The Master and Margarita

The first of my two graduate costume design projects. The Master and Margarita is a Russian novel by Mikhail Bulgakov. The novel is profoundly counter-cultural and hence was written in secret. Its mystical and supernatural events, as well as the discussion of Christian philosophy was scandalous subject matter at such a time in Russian history and though started in the 1920s the story was not but not fully published until 1967 on the count of pervasive censorship. in the 21st century, the novel was adapted into a play by Edward Kemp, whose version of the story was used for this production.
Set in Moscow in the 1930s, this theatre adaptation of the classic novel was inspired by the Russian avant-garde and a deck of cards.
